My rating: 5 of 5 stars
I have read this as both scanlation and official published paperback graphic novel.
A prince named Vald uses a family heirloom, a cursed sword, to save his kingdom from demons. This curses him into being a raging beast when he either takes the sword out or is unconscious. He doesn’t retain memory of his bad deeds when he is a demon so he has special cuffs that contain his curse.
On the advice of his counsel he seeks out a wizard adept in breaking curses. The wizard, Lord Halvir (Havi), is a greedy bastard that will, “Consider hearing (Vald’s) plea.” if he will help him get a cursed object he covets as he has no need for money.
Unknown to Vald, Havi knows more than he leads on and thoroughly does whatever the fuck he wants. Being ttold not to touch the prince in his sleep makes him want to uncuff him all the more.
Havi uncuffs the prince and is happy to subdue the beast by binding and seducing him. The two pick up others as the go along with the typical prince, knight, wizard, rogue/theif, cute magical fluff/changeling thing, fantasy theme.
Havi is posessive and becomes sincere. He eventually wants the princes’ heart but settles for the passion of the beast. The cutie changeling/bunny/yokai always hints about Havi’s dubcon (and the prince gets flustered everytime Havi touches him as he remembers sensations but is dying it) but the prince is too dense or effemifobic that he doesn’t realize what Havi is doing until Havi needs to contain the beast with a kiss as the prince transforms.
There are a ton of plot twist, deutoraganist, etc. It is an epic fantasy with adult themes and steong romance that goes with the smut. Volume 3 has a threesome with Havi, the beast and the prince.
I haven’t hit the end of #5. Its being published every 2 years so the next one will be out hopefully next year. It is typical boys love fiction in the fact that there are no women featured as supporting characters.
Just like Sekaiichi Hatsukoi and Junjou Romantica, this is Josei not Shojo, even if it is classed as Shonen-ai. The art is excellent, the smut is wonderfly done, the plot rich, the romance fantastical but believable enough, the characters diverse and the overall feel of the book is epic.
If you want a hetero story that is similar I would try Spell of Desire. If you want a smut-free, shojo rom-con, The Demon Love Spell
